Police today arrested a man reportedly armed with a knife after he fell through a skylight at a hospital accommodation block.

Scotland Yard said officers were called shortly before 1pm to reports of a man seen tampering with an alarm at a residential address in Foley Street, central London.

After officers arrived, the man, said to be in his 20s, barricaded himself into a room before going on to the roof then falling through the skylight.

A Yard spokesman said he was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage.

He has been taken to a central London hospital where he remains in a stable condition. His injuries are not believed to be serious.

The BBC reported that the block is used to accommodate staff at University College Hospital.

It said residents, some dressed in night clothes, gathered outside in the street after a fire alarm was set off.

One of the residents said a man had threatened him with a knife in one of the corridors, and had told him to leave the building.
