Veteran Labour MP Frank Field is in hospital after falling ill on Friday evening, his party said.

A statement from Labour said: “Frank Field was taken ill last night. He is now in hospital and responding well to treatment.”

He is reportedly being treated at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

Mr Field, 72, was elected to the Commons to represent Birkenhead in 1979.

Between 1980 and 1981 he served as shadow education and social security spokesman under Michael Foot, and from 1997 to 1998 he was minister for welfare reform in Tony Blair’s first cabinet.
