Nick Clegg has finalised his line-up for the general election campaign – and it doesn’t include a return to the role of economic spokesman for Vince Cable.

The Business Secretary – who held the role in the run-up to the 2010 election – will continue with the brief he has held throughout the coalition Government.

It means the high-profile role of taking on George Osborne and shadow chancellor Ed Balls in TV debates and elsewhere goes to Danny Alexander, currently the Chancellor’s number two as Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

That division of responsibilities, due to be formally announced by the Deputy Prime Minister tomorrow, was widely expected.

A return was also on the cards, the Spectator magazine reported, for sacked ex-ministers Sir Nick Harvey and Michael Moore to speak on defence and Europe as the party seeks to fill areas where it does not have ministers in the coalition carve-up.

Tim Farron – whose term as party president ended this month – was tipped by The Telegraph to take the foreign affairs brief.
