A Hunger Games movie fan has been served up a top award after baking a life-sized cake in the guise of Hollywood A-lister Jennifer Lawrence.

Lara Clarke, who is originally from Belfast but now plies her craft from her home in Walsall in the West Midlands, won a Gold award for her efforts at the Cake International event being held this weekend at Birmingham’s NEC.

She was also awarded a Silver for a similar cake confection depicting Game Of Thrones’ anti-hero Tyrion Lannister, played by Emmy award-winning actor Peter Dinklage.

Ms Clarke, who is taking next year off to marry her fiance, made headlines last year when she showed a cake replica of the movie star Johnny Depp at the same event.

The 28-year-old, whose awards both came in the decorative exhibit section, said she was “delighted” with the results.

She added her skills were all self-taught from “watching a lot of TV and movies, and plenty of (US-based television show) Cake Boss”.

Her creations have been made using 150 eggs, 10kg (22lb) each of butter, sugar and flour, 5kg (11lbs) of chocolate ganache and between 50-100kg (110-220lbs) of icing.

Ms Clarke put her inspiration down to a love of both the hit movie series Hunger Games – whose third iteration Mockingjay is soon to be in cinemas – and the critically acclaimed fantasy television show, produced by HBO.

“I just loved the Hunger Games and it just happened that as I was thinking of what to do, the third movie was announced and I thought it had to be,” she said.

Tyrion was prompted by her “pride” in the fact Game of Thrones is filmed in her Northern Irish homeland.

Ms Clarke spent 250 hours making her ideas a reality, baking layer upon layer of cake, before applying it to a frame of steel, wooden boards and PVC tubing, which formed the ‘skeleton’ of each model.

The cake was then covered in icing and painted with food colouring.

The models’ heads are carved blocks of white chocolate, with features sculpted from modelling chocolate, and then painted with colouring to suit the characters’ likeness.

She added that it was her fiance of two years, Nikki Mason, who provided the “brawn” behind her labours.

“He would have to run to the shop to get more packets when I ran out – I just make the cakes, but he does all the running around,” said Ms Clarke.

Despite her talents, Ms Clarke says she only bakes as a hobby and actually works as a chat moderator on the Tombola Bingo website.

“Baking is my hobby, it’s just something I do on the side,” she said.

“I do love doing what I do but I wouldn’t want to become a baker, because I don’t want to get sick of it.”

Anyone hoping for a photograph with the eye-catching cakes will be disappointed to learn they are destined to broken up and fed to the local wildlife.

“With Johnny (Depp) we took him to a local forest where we live, and broke up the cake into crumbs to feed to the animals,” she said.

“You don’t want to be giving the animals the icing, so we peel all that off, and you just end up with buckets of crumbs.”

She added: “You wouldn’t want to eat them anyway, because I started making them nearly four months ago so the cake’ll be a bit crunchy by now.”
