Lindsay Lohan has opened up about her time in prison and told Jonathan Ross the upside of her time in solitary confinement was she “finally had silence in my life”.

The 28-year-old actress – who is currently starring on the West End stage in Speed-the-Plow – served 14 days of a 90-day jail sentence in 2010 for breaking the terms of her probation after pleading guilty to using cocaine and driving under the influence.

Speaking to Ross on his ITV chat show she said she was put in a cell on her own for “safety purposes”.

She said: “Solitary confinement is actually very different, you leave your cell for one hour a day and you don’t go outside and I don’t think anyone knows that but the other girls in the other cells were in there for murder.”

Describing her time in prison as “scary”, she said: “The weirdest part for me was I finally had silence in my life … As terrified as I was and as scared as I was, I finally felt like I didn’t have to answer to anyone and I didn’t have to do anything for anyone. That was the weirdest part of it.”

It was reported today that Lohan’s representatives had tried to get ITV to cut sections of the interview where she spoke about her prison time, and she is said to have told the chatshow host: “You are not putting this on the show.”

But the former child star – who revealed she is enjoying being single at the moment – also opened up about her troubled past which has seen her struggle with drink and drugs.

Lindsay said: “I don’t think you could ever blame it on anyone else but yourself. I grew up in a very tumultuous family and I found peace and acting is therapy for me …

“That was an outlet for me, and that’s kind of why I did it when I lost that outlet and I felt pressured into doing it and I’d been doing so much for so long, it kind of just snapped and I didn’t know what to do and I wasn’t going home. People are usually going to uni or college at that time, I didn’t have that experience so those were those years.”
