London is leading the world in developing financial technology just as it did in financial services, Boris Johnson has said on a tour in the Far East.

The London Mayor is due at a series of engagements in Singapore today, including with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Mr Johnson will make a speech at the Chamber of Commerce and will visit the science museum to take part in a financial technology – dubbed “FinTech” by the sector – event.

Mr Johnson said: “London has always been at the forefront of financial innovation and now our financiers are leading another global revolution, this time driven by technological innovations that are changing the way the world does business, creating new jobs and economic growth both in the UK, and in the other financial centres of the world.”

The events come on the second day of a regional tour, which will take in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in the coming days.

Later plans include an event at the Singapore Botanic Garden with Kew Gardens executives, a bike ride in the Indonesian capital and a meeting with the Malaysian prime minister.

Earlier, on a visit to Singapore’s Chagri Airport, Mr Johnson said it was “chastening” to see a British architect overseeing construction of a new terminal at a hub airport.

He said: “It shows what you can do with a bit of drive and a bit of imagination and also a bit of foresight.”
