A man found dead in a burning car has been named by police amid reports that he had been chased and shot at by armed men on mopeds.

Father-of-two Michael Paxman, 32, was behind the wheel of a black Audi RS4 which crashed into a bus stop on the Old Kent Road in south east London in the early hours of Sunday, Scotland Yard said.

A post-mortem examination on Mr Paxman, who was from the Rotherhithe area of the capital, has not confirmed his cause of death, but the incident is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police’s homicide and major crime command.

Holes were discovered in the car, which was found crashed into a bus stop shortly before 2.30am.

Detective Inspector Dave Reid said Mr Paxman left home to get something to eat and appealed for information to help discover what happened to him.

He said: “Michael was a family man who leaves behind two young children, his family are devastated by his death.

“At this stage our forensic team continue to work on establishing the cause of the holes that were found in Michael’s car.

“I appreciate that there is a lot of speculation that these were caused by shots being fired at the car. Until those forensic tests are complete I cannot confirm that this is the case.

“There have been numerous reports about armed men on mopeds chasing the car and multiple shots being fired, but at this stage we have found absolutely no evidence to support that as a chain of events.”

Detectives believe that Mr Paxman left home between between 12.30am and 1am in his high-performance sports car, registration KE07 HWH.

He spent around an hour in the New Kent Road and Newington Causeway area of south east London before the collision, police said, and at 2.20am was seen driving back towards his home in Rotherhithe.

Police found his burning car on fire seven minutes later and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Further tests are due to be carried out to determine how he died.
