A children’s charity website and an article about an Indian inventor dubbed the Menstrual Man were among the most-shared BBC pages of 2014, the broadcaster says.

The BBC today revealed the TV shows, announcements and news events that made a splash on social media in the past year.

The voting page for the Best British Single at Radio 1’s Teen Awards was the most-shared BBC story across Facebook and Twitter, while the announcement that Sherlock had been commissioned for another series garnered 100,000 retweets and BBC coverage of the World Cup in Brazil reached 61.3 million people on Facebook.

The BBC’s future media director Ralph Rivera said: “Social platforms give us the opportunity to have a two-way relationship with viewers and listeners, uniting the nation around big events like the World Cup as well as taking fans behind the scenes on their favourite programmes.

“2014 saw over 100,000 people retweet the recommission announcement of Sherlock and Strictly install a vine booth to bring you closer to the action. We also celebrated the first full year of BBC Trending, our innovative news unit that finds the stories behind the big viral hits. 2015 is set to be the biggest year yet for social media, and we can’t wait to share it with you here at the BBC.”

The BBC Children In Need website was the second most-shared piece of BBC content across social networking platforms Facebook and Twitter.

A news article about Arunachalam Muruganantham, a school dropout from southern India who invented a simple machine used to make cheap sanitary pads was fifth in the list, while the news that Richard Attenborough had died at 90 was seventh.
