A UK government led by Ed Miliband would deliver “fair play and fair rules”, shadow Welsh secretary Owen Smith will tell fellow party members.

Mr Smith is due to address Welsh Labour’s conference in Swansea later today.

The MP for Pontypridd promises his party will do its utmost to help ordinary working people while standing up against the “vested interests” of mega-rich tax-dodgers.

Mr Smith is expected to say: “Under Ed Miliband Labour has got our mojo back as a party unequivocally on the side of working people – standing up to vested interests and always battling in the people’s interest.

“From tax avoidance to the abuse of corporate and media power, an Ed Miliband-led government will deliver the fair play and fair rules, the chwarae teg that people expect in Wales and rightly expect from Labour in particular.”

The comments come off the back of Mr Miliband’s speech yesterday.

He announced plans to launch an independent investigation into legal loopholes which he said saw large corporations avoid paying millions of pounds worth of tax.

Mr Miliband said: “In Britain today we risk having one rule for the rich and powerful and another for everybody else.

“What we are seeing is the growth of hugely complex and aggressive tax avoidance schemes, often based offshore.

“The sort of activity that has left the United Kingdom a £34 billion hole in our nation’s finances. That’s why we have to act.”

The Labour leader also pledged Wales would be offered more powers over policing, energy and ports if Labour wins the UK general election.

Also yesterday, Welsh Labour leader Carwyn Jones revealed details of a £40 million scheme aiming to create 10,000 new businesses over the next five years.
