South African athlete Oscar Pistorius is jailed for 5 years in Pretoria for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Thokozile Masipa has said that the verdict was her’s alone and that she believes she has found a balance between punishment, retribution and rehabilitation as she concluded the 6 month long trial.

Oscar Pistorius also received a 3 year suspended sentence for fire-arms offences as he was lead away to prison.

Last month Pistorius was cleared of murder by Judge Masipa but prosecution lawyers had called for at least a 10 year sentence for the lesser crime of culpable homicide.

It is widely thought that he will shortly be led away from North Gauteng High Court to begin his sentence at Pretoria Central Prison.

Early Release

No sooner was the sentence passed and twitter-sphere was alive with speculation that Pistorius could be free in months:

Pistorius killed Ms Steenkamp, 29, in the early hours of February 14 2013 when he shot her through the bathroom door at his home in Pretoria. He insisted he thought he was firing at an intruder.
