A Virgin Atlantic passenger plane is trying to land back at Gatwick airport after reports that the aircraft has a landing gear problem.

The plane took off from the West Sussex late this morning bound for Las Vegas.

A Gatwick spokesman said: “There is a Virgin Atlantic aircraft looking to return to Gatwick.”

Tweets showed the track of the aircraft, which was circling Gatwick. Fire and rescue crews are understood to be standing by.

Virgin said: “Virgin Atlantic can confirm that flight VS43 on December 29, travelling to McCarran International Airport Las Vegas, returned to Gatwick due to a technical issue with one of the landing gears.

“The aircraft is preparing to implement a non-standard landing procedure at Gatwick airport. A further update will be issued as soon as possible.”

The plane is a Boeing 747 jumbo jet.
