David Cameron is preparing to host talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi later this year, No 10 has confirmed.

Downing Street insisted that “no issues are off the table” when the former head of Egypt’s armed forces, who led the coup overthrowing Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, takes part in the bilateral discussions.

Morsi was sentenced to death by an Egyptian court this week over the 2011 mass prison break that eventually brought him to power.

The Prime Minister’s official spokeswoman said: “We have been looking at the possibility of President Sisi coming to have bilateral talks with the Prime Minister at some point later this year.

“The Prime Minister has talked before about how it is important that we engage with countries where there are issues which are important to the UK’s national interest and how we can work together on them.

“When we engage with these countries of course we can raise matters of concern, n o issues are off the table in discussions, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t engage with people.”
