The Queen is due to return to London, three days after the birth of her fifth great-grandchild.

It is believed she could meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s daughter Princess Charlotte for the first time, but a Buckingham Palace spokesman declined to comment on “speculation”.

A source said the Queen would be at the palace today, having spent the weekend privately.

She attended a military event at Richmond Castle, North Yorkshire, on Saturday and was dressed appropriately in pink as William and Kate’s daughter was born.

The Princess, who was born overdue on May 2 at 8.34am, weighing 8lbs 3oz, is fourth in line to the throne.

William and Kate have recognised the Queen and the Duke’s mother Diana, Princess of Wales, as their daughter’s full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Other members of the family have already met the new addition, including her grandfather the Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla and Kate’s mother Carole Middleton.

Prince Harry, speaking from Australia where he has been working with the country’s armed forces, described his niece as “absolutely beautiful” and said he could not wait to meet her .
