A record-breaking August for shuttle traffic helped Channel Tunnel company Eurotunnel to increased revenues over the summer.

Eurotunnel group revenues for July to September totalled 343.9 million euros (about £271.7 million) – a 7% rise on the same period last year.

The company carried a record 375,000 vehicles on shuttle trains through the tunnel in August, breaking the daily record three times during the month.

The new daily record is 16,416, with the week of August 11-17 seeing an all-time seven-day high of 85,400 vehicles.

Although the number of coaches carried in July to September dipped 7%, truck shuttles rose 6% and the number of cars increased 3%.

The number of rail freight trains which passed through the tunnel rose 9% to 681, while the number of passengers carried on high-speed Eurostar trains increased 3%.

It was also a good summer for Eurotunnel’s MyFerryLink cross-Channel ferry services, with revenues up 7% to 160.3 million euros (about £126.7 million).

Eurotunnel is appealing against a decision by the Competition and Markets Authority to prevent MyFerryLink from operating the former SeaFrance ferries Berlioz and Rodin on the Dover-Calais route.
