A rugby stadium has been made off limits while police investigate a “serious incident” in south Wales.

Swarms of officers descended on Pontypridd today prompting shock and surprise as well as speculation from locals.

Officers have been searching undergrowth and the force’s helicopter has been spotted hovering over head.

A statement issued on Facebook by Pontypridd RFC said police were investigating something “major”.

It said: “Supporters, partners and neighbours of Pontypridd RFC are advised that the Sardis Road stadium is currently not accessible.

“This is due to a police investigation into a major incident in the vicinity.

“The club will keep all concerned informed regarding access to the Sardis Road stadium as further information is received from the relevant authorities.”

A South Wales Police spokesman said the force was not able to give any further details at present as its enquiries were still in the early stages.
