A major search is under way for a man who is missing after going to the aid of a young girl who got into trouble in a river.

The 32-year-old is thought to have gone into the River Esk at Longtown, Cumbria, to help the youngster earlier today.

She was rescued but the man, from the Carlisle, got into difficulties himself and disappeared, Cumbria Police said.

Police divers have arrived at the scene to carry out underwater searches, and the coastguard, mountain rescue teams, fire and ambulance services and an RAF Sea King helicopter have all been drafted in to help hunt for the man.

A spokesman for Cumbria Constabulary said: “Police were called at 4.15pm to a report of a man in the water, believed to have been in difficulties.

“A girl was rescued from the water shortly before and is at Cumberland Infirmary receiving treatment. However she is not believed to be seriously hurt at this time.”

The family of the missing man are being supported by specialist officers.

Traffic lights are being placed on Longtown Bridge in the town to help with traffic management.
