A married religious studies teacher will be sentenced today for having a sexual relationship with a teenage pupil.

Stuart Kerner, 44, was found guilty of having sex with the girl at Bexleyheath Academy in south-east London and at his home during their illicit affair when she was 16.

He took her virginity on a yoga mat in a store cupboard at the school, where Kerner was vice principal, in the same week his wife miscarried their second child, his trial was told.

Kerner took advantage of the “besotted” schoolgirl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and told the teenager their relationship was “written in the stars” during their affair in 2012, Inner London Crown Court heard.

After the jury returned guilty verdicts last month, Kerner’s wife, who supported him at court throughout the trial, reacted by saying, “it’s stupid”, before w alking out and screaming in anguish.

The jury of six men and six women took six hours and 11 minutes to reach their verdicts.

Kerner, a father of one, was found guilty on two counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust. H e was found not guilty on four counts of the same offence.

He was also acquitted of two counts of sexual activity with a child, which relate to when she was 15.

Kerner, of Russett Close, Aylesford, Kent, was warned by Judge Joanna Greenberg QC that all sentencing options remained open.

He is on bail and will be sentenced at Inner London Crown Court.
