Ed Sheeran has continued his astonishing run of success by topping the best-selling album list for iTunes in the UK – while Pharrell Williams’s Happy is the biggest-selling song.

Sheeran, who picked up three Grammy nominations last week, was top-seller for his second album x and said he was “absolutely buzzing” at hearing the news today.

Last week the 23-year-old’s album was also named as the world’s most-played album of 2014 by streaming service Spotify.

The end-of-year lists compiled by iTunes rank In The Lonely Hour by Sam Smith in second position for UK album sales.

Smith – who was shortlisted for six Grammys – is also named artist of the year by the download service, to crown his year of success. He said: “It’s an honour to be named artist of the year. I’m very, very thankful and owe so much to iTunes for their incredible support with In The Lonely Hour.”

British act Clean Bandit were runners-up in the best-selling song list for their track Rather Be, which features vocalist Jess Glynne. The song was ranked the year’s best song by iTunes.

The best-selling movie for the year on iTunes was Disney hit Frozen, while the biggest-selling TV show was the fourth series of Game Of Thrones.
