Former footballer Clarke Carlisle is due to appear in court today charged with a drink-driving offence.

The 35-year-old, who played for Burnley, Queens Park Rangers, Leeds United and Northampton Town, has previously had his case adjourned after being a dmitted to hospital when he jumped into the path of a 12-ton lorry on the A64, near York.

The former Professional Footballers’ Association chairman has since said he felt he “had to die” after losing his job as a pundit on ITV, going on a gambling spree and being charged with the drink-driving offence of failing to provide a sample.

He was in a coma until mid-January and had been bailed until today’s hearing at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court in London – his first appearance.
