A senior director of the Superdry fashion business has been forced to step down after he was the subject of a bankruptcy order.

Shaun Wills was SuperGroup’s finance director from 2012, having previously worked in senior roles at Habitat and clothing business FatFace.

SuperGroup said its board became aware yesterday that Mr Wills was made the subject of a personal bankruptcy order on February 10.

It said: ” This is a personal matter, on which SuperGroup will not comment further, and is wholly unrelated to the financial position of the company.”

Mr Wills, who is a qualified accountant with 22 years’ experience in the retail sector in finance, strategy and business development roles, received more than £500,000 in pay and bonuses in the last financial year.

SuperGroup said that Nick Wharton, who is the former chief executive of Dunelm, will take on the finance director’s role on an interim basis.

Shares in the company fell by more than 3% today.

Cantor Fitzgerald retail analyst Freddie George described the statement as bizarre and said the timing ” could not be worse” following on from the recent departure of Susanne Given as chief operating officer.
