A controversial film about a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un hits UK cinemas today.

The Interview, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, had its US release cancelled late last year amid a hacking plot of the Sony Pictures studio in which terror threats were made against cinemas that chose to screen it.

The FBI insisted the online attack was carried out by North Korea, and after much political and celebrity pressure the film was eventually shown online and in a limited number of cinemas.

The hack resulted in thousands of internal Sony files leaked online.

It was announced yesterday that Amy Pascal will step down as co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and head of the film studio.

During the hack Ms Pascal was revealed to have made racist comments about President Obama’s movie preferences, after which she apologised for the “insensitive and inappropriate” comments.
