Two women are due to go on trial today charged with the murder of an eight-year-old girl.

Kiki Muddar and Polly Chowdhury are accused of killing Ayesha Ali between August 27 and 29 2013.

The pair, who were living together at the time, are also charged with manslaughter and causing or allowing the death of a child between March 1 and August 29 2013.

During that time, Ayesha was allegedly under “serious risk of harm by unlawful acts” and the defendants either caused her death or failed to take steps to protect her.

Muddar, 43, of Green Lane, Ilford, Essex, and Chowdhury, 35, of Broomfield Road, Romford in Essex, deny the charges against them.

The six-week trial will be heard at the Old Bailey before judge Christopher Moss QC.

A jury is expected to be formally sworn in this morning before prosecutor Richard Whittam QC opens the case against the pair.

Both defendants are in custody.
