2014 has been a year full of controversy, drama and success. There will now be countless ’round-ups’, ‘awards for’ and ‘look backs’ at the year that was. Here’s our alternative list of some highs and lows, and the best and worst of the past 12 months.

1. Selfie of the year

Ellen DeGeneres Oscar’s selfie broke the World record for re-tweets and nearly broke Twitter.

2.  Best nun

Sister Cristina Scuccia stunned audiences this year on the Italian version of The Voice with an awesome performance of Alicia Keys’ ‘No One’.

3. Bravest cat

In California, a brave house cat rescues a child from a vicious attack by a dog. Good on you cat.

4. Worst memory

In October, poor Ed Milband admitted that he’d forgotten large parts of his Labour Party Conference speech – including any mention of the deficit. Oops.

5. Best Christmas lights show

Music teacher Tom BetGeorge was determined that this year’s light-show at his house in Newark County, California timed perfectly with his favourite movie theme. Not only has Tom achieved national recognition all over the US, he also used the proceeds from his light show to benefit local charities – what a guy!
