Sixteen people have been killed in a twin suicide bombing in Lebanon.

The attack in a Shiite suburb in southern Beirut also left 40 people wounded, according to George Kittaneh, head of the Lebanese Red Cross operations.

The explosions hit minutes apart in an area called Burj al-Barajneh during rush hour. No-one has claimed responsibility for the bombings yet.

Southern Beirut is a stronghold of Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group that is fighting in Syria along with government forces.

The area has been hit in the past, and Sunni militant groups have threatened to carry out more such attacks.
