Three people have been confirmed dead and 107 others are missing after a landslide triggered by torrential rains buried houses on the main island of Java, Indonesian officials said.

About 105 houses have been swept away by the landslide in the hilly district of Banjarnegara in Central Java province, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said.

He added 38 injured villagers have been rushed to a hospital, four of them in critical condition.

Rescuers, including soldiers, police and villagers, have been searching for 107 people still missing.

Incessant rains began pounding the area yesterday afternoon.

Seasonal downpours cause frequent landslides and flash floods each year in Indonesia, a chain of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near fertile flood plains.
