Violent clashes between protesters and police in the Macedonian capital Skopje have left 38 police officers and one protester injured, while 30 people were detained.

Interior minister Gordana Jankuloska said six of the officers were seriously injured in the overnight clashes, which she described as “a brutal attack on the police” which saw protesters throwing eggs, bottles and stones and using metal bars.

More than 1,000 people had gathered late last night in front of the government building to protest against the 2011 death of 22-year-old Martin Neskoski, who was beaten by police during post-election celebrations.

The clashes broke out hours after Macedonia’s opposition leader accused the country’s prime minister of attempting to cover up Mr Neskoski’s death.
