Lawyer Amal Clooney has accused the Canadian government of not doing enough to secure the release of a Canadian Al-Jazeera journalist from Egypt.

Mohamed Fahmy is out on bail awaiting a retrial after more than a year behind bars in Egypt on terrorism-related charges.

Mrs Clooney, wife of Hollywood star George Clooney, said in a statement today that Canada’s “sheepish whimpers are woefully inadequate”.

She added that calls for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to pick up the phone to personally intervene have “so far fallen on deaf ears”.

Mrs Clooney also said the Canadian government had received assurances that Mr Fahmy would be released and, when that did not happen, it merely issued a short statement by a junior minister calling for his release.

Mr Harper’s spokesman, Carl Vallee, said the premier has personally raised the case with the Egyptian president.
