A small plane with 11 people on board has crashed in mountainous western Nepal, a government official has said.

Padamlal Lamichane said at least one person has died, according to initial reports.

He said the plane, belonging to Kasthamandap Airlines, appeared to have technical problems and was attempting to land in a farmer’s field near the top of a mountain when it crashed.

The remote area is at least four hours’ trek from the nearest town.

Police and army rescuers are on their way to the site and a helicopter has been called in from the capital, Kathmandu.

Officials had earlier said eight people were on board the plane.

On Wednesday, 23 people were killed when a plane crashed into a mountain in central Nepal.
