Two young boys playing on a beach in Australia have found the body of an infant buried in the sand.

New South Wales state police Inspector Andrew Holland says the boys found the baby’s naked body while digging in the sand at Sydney’s popular Maroubra beach today.

The discovery comes a week after a baby was rescued alive after languishing for days at the bottom of a drain in a Sydney suburb.

The body found today was too decomposed for officials to immediately determine the baby’s age, gender or cause of death.

A post-mortem examination will be performed.

Officials said they were hunting through hospital records to try and find the parents of the infant buried at the beach.
