President Barack Obama says Donald Trump is waging a White House campaign based on “simplistic solutions and scapegoating”.

In an interview on NBC’s Today show, Mr Obama said Mr Trump “is putting out a message that has had adherents through history”.

He said the Republican hopeful is appealing to people’s fears and uncertainty about the future.

Asked how seriously Mr Trump should be taken, the president said: “Talk to me if he wins.”

When asked what he thought about the prospect of a Trump presidency, Mr Obama replied: “I can imagine it in a Saturday night skit.”

But Mr Obama conceded the country is more divided than he promised. Asked if he felt responsible for that, he said: “It’s a regret,” but he said he “could not be prouder” of his accomplishments.
