Part of a beach in Hawaii has been reopened after a snorkeller reported being bitten by a shark.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources said a 50-year-old Alaskan man reported being attacked yesterday afternoon.

The department said he was snorkelling off Airplane Beach, west Maui, when he saw a 5ft shark, felt a bump, and then immediate pain.

He swam to shore and was taken to a hospital and treated for a leg laceration. There was no further word on the seriousness of the injury or his condition.

The department closed the beach area until officials could assess the situation. It reopened after a helicopter flight over the area failed to spot any sharks.
