The president of world football governing body Fifa has condemned a “cowardly” pipe bomb attack on the Cyprus Referee Association’s clubhouse.

Sepp Blatter also offered full support to the Cyprus Football Association’s efforts to protect match officials.

Police said the low-yield explosive device placed at the clubhouse entrance in the early hours of Monday caused minor damage.

Cypriot referees are sometimes the target of abuse and intimidation.

Referee association chairman Michalis Argyrou said a firebomb was tossed at a referee’s home in Limassol two weeks ago.

In February, the Cypriot federation postponed all first division matches for a weekend after a bombing damaged the car of a top referee in the country.

Mr Argyrou urged police to take action in order to stop this “repeated pattern of behaviour.”
