South African firefighters are battling to control a wildfire that has burned down five homes in Cape Town’s southern peninsula.

Nearly 150 firefighters, along with park volunteers, have tackled the blaze since early this morning, spokeswoman Liezl Moodie said.

She said helicopters are also water-bombing the area around Table Mountain National Park.

Ms Moodie said no one has been killed and no serious injuries recorded. She said in addition to the five homes destroyed, residents near the fire were asked to evacuate their homes, including three retirement villages.

Earlier, the South African Press Association reported that about 50 people were treated for smoke inhalation.

It said the fire started yesterday and was brought under control but then a bigger fire started after 2am today.
