The US Capitol in Washington has been locked down after police reported shots fired on the west front of the building.

Kimberly Schneider of the Capitol Police said the suspected gunman had been “neutralised,” but offered no further explanation.

She also said the Capitol Police are investigating a suspicious package on the lower west terrace of the building.

No-one is being allowed to enter or exit the Capitol and the visitors’ centre, and some streets around the complex are closed.

Congress has been on spring break for two weeks and lawmakers are set to return to work on Monday.
