A man has been arrested after a car was rammed into the headquarters of Spain’s ruling conservative Popular Party in Madrid.

Police have cordoned off the streets around the headquarters and are searching for possible explosives.

A police robot could be seen close to the Genova Street office in Madrid city centre, and ambulances lined a nearby road in apparent preparation for an emergency situation.

A police spokeswoman said bomb disposal experts are searching the area. She said police found two gas cylinders in the car as well as an unidentified substance.

The driver of the car has been arrested.

Cadena SER radio cited police as saying said the man admitted attacking the party headquarters because he had lost his business in the economic crisis.
