Two car bomb attacks at a security checkpoint and on a commercial street have killed 17 people in Shia areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, officials said.

The first attack happened on Saturday night when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into a security checkpoint in Baghdad’s northern district of Khazimiyah, killing 10 people and wounding 25, police said.

Later, authorities said a car bomb explosion on a commercial street killed seven people and wounded 18 in north-western Baghdad.

Iraq is in its worst crisis since the 2011 withdrawal of US troops as Sunni militant groups led by Islamic State have seized a third of the country.
