Stars converged on the Super Bowl both on and off the field, with celebrities including Britney Spears and Mark Wahlberg among the spectators and an elaborate half-time show by Katy Perry.

Wahlberg, a Boston native, was pulling for a victory by the eventual winners, the New England Patriots – and an invite to their after-party.

Actors Chris Evans, a Patriots fan and Seattle Seahawks fan Chris Pratt continued their rivalry in the stands, with each wearing their respective team’s gear in a picture posted online by Pratt’s wife Anna Faris.

Law And Order’s Mariska Hargitay, comedians Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell and rapper Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian were among other stars at the game held at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

The stars were treated to a halftime show by Perry, Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot. Perry’s extravaganza featured giant palm trees, bikini-clad dancers and fireworks.

The game capped several days of parties and events hosted by major stars, including Oscar winner Jamie Foxx.

West performed alongside Rihanna at a party thrown by DirecTV, where guests included Kardashian, John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen.

Legend sang America The Beautiful before kick-off. Teigen kissed her husband and snapped pictures of him before he took his seat at his piano.

But some famous faces did not come to root for a particular team.

Spears didn’t announce her preferred team, and neither did former US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, who said she just wanted to enjoy a good game.

Earlier, Super Bowl Sunday got off to an inconvenient start for hundreds of passengers trying to get to Phoenix for the game after dense fog caused numerous delays and cancellations at Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport.

Airport spokeswoman Heather Lissner said the fog led to 30 arriving and departing flights being cancelled, with another 80 flights delayed.

New England Patriots won the game 28-24.
