A Cypriot government spokesman has denied allegations by British holidaymakers of an attempted child abduction at a hotel on the island.

Viktoras Papadopoulos called the heavy media coverage of the allegations in Britain “unnecessary and completely unfounded”.

Mr Papadopoulos said police found nothing to incriminate a 19-year-old Bulgarian man who British tourists said had approached their children and videotaped them with his mobile telephone.

He said a search of the man’s home and telephone as well as interviews with British tourists who made the allegation turned up nothing suspicious.

The visitors were staying at a hotel in Protaras on the Mediterranean island’s south-eastern coast.

Mr Papadopoulos said Cyprus is one of the world’s safest tourist destinations and its police force is highly trained in the protection of children.
