Talks on Iran’s nuclear programme appear likely to be extended beyond their midnight deadline, but China’s foreign minister said negotiators are still working on elements of a deal.

US secretary of state John Kerry and Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif agreed on Sunday to start discussion on continuing the talks past the target date. If that happens, the negotiations are likely to be adjourned until later.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said negotiators are still having “consultations” on a final agreement that meets both US demands for strict curbs on Tehran’s nuclear programme and Iran’s push for sanctions relief, suggesting that moves toward an immediate deal had not yet been abandoned.

Mr Wang has now arrived in Austria to join the foreign ministers of the other countries negotiating with Iran – the US, Russia, the UK, France and Germany.
