The comedy troupe behind the cult hit film Super Troopers has launched a crowd-funding campaign to help bankroll a sequel.

Broken Lizard, which made the 2001 police comedy, has asked for two million dollars (£1.3m) in contributions to get Super Troopers 2 produced.

The troupe says Fox Searchlight has agreed to distribute the sequel in North America if it can pay to make it.

The call for contributions, posted on Indiegogo.com, has raised more than 1.1 million dollars (£743,000). The campaign runs for a month and if the goal is achieved, shooting will start this summer.

The campaign mirrors that of the Veronica Mars film Warner Bros released last year after a Kickstarter campaign.

Super Troopers, about five Vermont state police officers, made 23.2 million dollars (£15.6m) worldwide.
