Denmark’s crown prince has apologised for ignoring police warnings and crossing the country’s longest suspension bridge during a storm.

Crown Prince Frederik’s car crossed the 1.6-kilometre (mile-long) Great Belt suspension bridge on Sunday without permission, Danish police inspector Sten Noerskov said.

The bridge was closed at the time because of strong winds and other cars were lined up at a toll barrier waiting for it to reopen.

Mr Noerskov said that police allowed the crown prince’s car through the barrier for security reasons but did not give him permission to cross the bridge because “it was too dangerous”. He did so anyway.

Danish broadcaster DR said the Royal House apologised for the incident, saying the crown prince “regrets it happened”.
