At least 53 people have died in the Philippines after flash floods and landslides were triggered by a tropical storm.

Most of the dead were in the central island-provinces of Samar and Leyte, including 10 people in Tanauan, which was devastated by last year’s Typhoon Haiyan, rescue officials said.

At least eight are missing and more than 136,000 have fled their flooded communities to emergency shelters.

Forecasters say the storm, Jangmi, has weakened and will dissipate off the western island province of Palawan.
