European Union nations have agreed on tougher emissions tests for diesel cars after the Volkswagen scandal showed previous testing methods could be cheated on.

The European Commission said that experts from the 28 EU nations approved the more stringent methods by a “large majority” on Wednesday. The tests will resemble real road conditions more closely.

From September 1 2017 new car models will have to pass the new emissions test before they can be put on the market.
