Boris Nemtsov, a leading Russian opposition figure and the country’s former deputy prime minister, has been killed in a drive-by shooting in Moscow today.

The death of Mr Nemtsov, a sharp critic of President Vladimir Putin, comes a day before a major opposition rally in Moscow.

The Interior Ministry, which oversees Russia’s police force, said Mr Nemtsov was shot four times from a passing car as he was walking on a bridge just outside the Kremlin.

Mr Nemtsov was deputy prime minister in the 1990s and later became a prominent opponent to Mr Putin, helping organise street protests and exposing official corruption.
