A compound housing foreigners on the outskirts of the Afghan capital, Kabul, is under attack, according to local officials.

A huge explosion was heard at the gate of Green Village, which houses foreigners working for international service contractors.

Kabul’s chief of police, General Mohammand Zahir, said shooting could be heard from inside the compound.

He said that the area has been surrounded by security forces.

It is the second attack on a foreign compound in Kabul in recent days.

Insurgent activity has intensified in the months since president Ashraf Ghani was inaugurated as president and ahead of the withdrawal of foreign forces at the end of the year.
