At least four people are dead after a small plane crashed into a building at a Kansas airport, officials said.

Wichita Fire Marshal Brad Crisp said at least four people inside the building at Mid-Continent Airport were killed and five more injured.

Four people are still missing but a search had to be halted after a portion of the building collapsed and was deemed too dangerous for crews.

Huge plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles around the city after the crash.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said the twin-engine Beechcraft King Air reported losing engine power just after take-off.

Mr Molinaro said the plane crashed into the building on airport property while attempting to return to the runway.
