Google is buying the entire output of an 18-turbine Dutch wind energy project to supply power to a major data centre.

Company officials said Google wants both price certainty and to ensure that the 600 million euro (£480 million) data centre it is building in Eemshaven will be supplied by renewable energy from the start.

The 62-megawatt wind project is also still under construction at nearby Delfzijl, with turbines both onshore and off the coast in the North Sea.

Google did not disclose terms but said it has signed a 10-year contract. The US search giant has inked similar deals in Finland and Sweden in the past two years.

The data centre is due to be completed in 2017.
