A Florida postman who steered his gyrocopter through protected Washington airspace for 30 miles to the US Capitol “should have been blown out of the air”, a top politician has said.

Chairman of the House of Representatives oversight committee Jason Chaffetz said Doug Hughes was “lucky to be alive”.

Speaking after a closed-door briefing from the Secret Service and Capitol Police for senior members of Congress, Utah Republican Mr Chaffetz said security tracked Mr Hughes as he flew from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to the lawn of the Capitol last week, without being stopped.

Mr Chaffetz said a decision was made not to shoot Mr Hughes down.

The incident has exposed a gap in the government’s efforts to ensure the security of the White House, Capitol and other critical buildings in Washington DC.
