The man accused of abducting British-born university student Hannah Graham in Virginia is being arraigned on an unrelated sexual assault from nearly a decade ago.

Jesse Matthew will appear at Fairfax County Circuit Court by videolink from a jail in the Charlottesville area, where he is being held.

Matthew was indicted earlier this month on charges including attempted capital murder in connection with a September 2005 sexual assault on a 26-year-old woman who was walking home from a supermarket in Fairfax.

For several years, authorities have said the assault was linked by DNA to the disappearance of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. Fairfax authorities charged Matthew shortly after investigators linked the Harrington case to Ms Graham’s abduction.

The remains of Ms Graham were found two weeks ago. The 18-year-old , of Alexandria, Georgia, moved from Britain to the US when she was about six. She was studying at the University of Virginia.

Her parents, John and Sue Graham, said at the time the remains were found: “When we started this journey together we all hoped for a happier ending. Sadly that was not to be.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful daughter. Although we have lost our precious Hannah, the light she radiated can never be extinguished.”
