German authorities have seized 330 kilograms (728 pounds) of heroin worth an estimated 50 million euro (£39 million) that smugglers brought to Europe hidden in a shipment of bottled pickles and garlic from Iran.

A Syrian-Iraqi organised crime ring that has operated for years is believed to be behind the attempt to import the drugs, seized on September 22 around the western city of Essen, the Federal Criminal Police Office said.

Police said the months-long investigation was part of efforts to target international organised crime.

They refused to say whether the drugs were believed to have originated in Iran, or were hidden in the shipment en route.

Two brothers in Germany and a Dutchman who lived in Belgium were arrested in September in connection with the case.
